Baltimore, MD  - Mar. 24, 2026 - Several members of the Baltimore Jewish community competed this past Friday, March 20, at the Orienteering USA National Championships, held at the University of Maryland, College Park.

Among the standout performers, Yechiel Cynamon (M10-) earned a silver medal in his age category, demonstrating exceptional skill, focus, and determination. CY Berkovitz (M12-) also delivered a strong performance, finishing in second place in his category.

Orienteering is a unique navigational sport that challenges participants to use a highly detailed map and a compass to navigate unfamiliar terrain. Competitors must locate a series of checkpoints, known as “controls,” in a specific order, choosing the most efficient routes to complete the course in the fastest possible time. The sport requires not only physical endurance but also critical thinking and decision-making under pressure.

Yechiel and CY were introduced to orienteering through their involvement in local Scouting programs. Inspired by the challenge and excitement of the sport, they have continued to develop their skills and now regularly participate in competitions. In turn, they help bring that enthusiasm back to the community by introducing fellow Scouts and Cub Scouts to orienteering, encouraging others to build confidence, resilience, and outdoor navigation skills.

Much of the local orienteering scene is supported by the Quantico Orienteering Club (QOC), one of the largest and most active orienteering clubs in the country. The club regularly hosts events throughout Maryland, Virginia, and Washington, D.C., including in nearby parks such as Patapsco Valley and Wheaton Regional Park, making the sport accessible to beginners and experienced competitors alike.

Also spotted at the event was Dovid Cynamon, adding to the strong local presence at the national competition.

Their efforts are a source of pride for the community and highlight the positive impact of youth engagement in outdoor activities and skill-building programs.
