The UN General Assembly approved a resolution advanced by France and Saudi Arabia calling for support for a two-state solution, recognizing a Palestinian state on Friday.

The resolution was approved by the majority of 142 countries in favor,  with 10 voting against it and 12 abstaining from the "New York Declaration on the Peaceful Settlement of the Question of Palestine and the Implementation of the Two-State Solution."

Israeli Ambassador to the UN Danny Danon responded to the resolution, stating, "This one-sided declaration will not be remembered as a step toward peace, only as another hollow gesture that weakens this Assembly’s credibility…This is not diplomacy. It is theatre.

"The only beneficiary is Hamas…When terrorists are the ones cheering, you are not advancing peace; you are advancing terror.”

Calls to recognize Palestinian statehood

The issue of Palestinian statehood gained new momentum over the past two years as numerous countries voiced their criticism of the war in Gaza.

Hamas broke an existing ceasefire on October 7, 2023, and massacred more that 1,200 people while abducted 251 more. Israel responded to the assault, which including the abduction and murder of civilians including civilian children, by launching a military campaign in Gaza.

Israeli authorities have been vocally critical of plans to recognize a Palestinian state, arguing such a move would reward Hamas for its terrorism and perpetuate future violence.

International bodies have expressed a preference that the Palestinian Authority would take over leadership of a Palestinian state, despite having been ousted from the Gaza Strip nearly 20 years ago. Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu has asserted that the PA would not have a role in governing the enclave.
