New York, NY - Sept. 11, 2025  - The United States will stop to remember the 9/11 terrorist attacks on Thursday, marking a dark moment in U.S. history.

The annual moments of silence and reading of names will be held on Thursday in Lower Manhattan at the 9/11 Memorial and Museum.

It marks 24 years since New Yorkers and Americans across the nation vowed to “never forget.”

What happened on September 11, 2001

"9/11" is an abbreviated date standing for September 11th, 2001. Terrorists carried out multiple, coordinated attacks on the World Trade Center in New York City and the Pentagon in Arlington, Virginia.

Nineteen terrorists from al-Qaeda, an Islamist extremist group, hijacked four planes. Two were deliberately crashed into the World Trade Center's Twin Towers. The third crashed into the Pentagon.

There was a fourth hijacked plane headed for the U.S. Capitol building in Washington, D.C. The passengers and crew members aboard the flight fought back against the al-Qaeda members, crashing the plane into an empty field in Pennsylvania.

The 9/11 attacks came under former President George W. Bush’s first term in office, and Rudy Giuliani was in his final months as mayor of New York City.

The attacks took place on Primary Election Day in New York City, and less than a week after students went back to school for the year. Election polls opened at 6 a.m. that morning, a couple of hours before the tragedy struck.

Flight 11 crashed into the North Tower at 8:46 a.m., followed by Flight 175, which struck the South Tower 17 minutes later, at 9:03 a.m.

The planes burst into flames upon impact with the buildings, and burning jet fuel caused both towers to collapse.

Thursday's ceremony will pause for six moments of silence to mark when the planes crashed and when each tower fell.
