Teen Riding E-bike Struck By Vehicle On First Day Of School, Deputies Urge Safety

Deltona, FL - Aug. 12, 2025 - A teen spent his first day of school in the hospital after he was hit by a car while riding an e-bike and then dragged 15 feet, becoming trapped under the car.

According to the Volusia County Sheriff's Office (VSO), the 14-year-old boy was riding his e-bike to his private school along Howland Boulevard when he approached Roble Lane. Deputies say that as the teen crossed the Roble Lane crosswalk, the driver of a Kia Soul entered the crosswalk at a low speed in an attempt to turn onto Howland Boulevard.

VSO says the vehicle struck the victim, dragged him 15 feet, and then came to a stop with the victim trapped under the vehicle.

Witnesses and a passing tow truck driver stopped to help the victim and were able to lift the vehicle off the 14-year-old, who was wearing a helmet.

Deputies say that despite being injured, the 14-year-old remained conscious at the scene. Once safely removed from underneath the car, Air One transported him as a trauma alert to Arnold Palmer Hospital in Orlando, where he was in a stable condition.

VSO deputies want to emphasize safe operations and awareness of e-bikers due to them becoming more popular on Volusia County's roads and sidewalks.

Deputies also offered safety tips for children who ride e-bikes and drivers:

• Wear a helmet. Helmets can reduce the risk of head injuries.
• Parents should talk to their kids about the rules of the road.
• Avoid using cell phones or earbuds while riding e-bikes.
• Education is key.

• Don't drive distracted.
• Drivers are advised to use special caution in school zones.
• Drivers should also know that e-bikes can travel faster than traditional bicycles.
