Baltimore, MD - Aug. 8, 2025 - Many drivers are unaware when one or more of their vehicle’s lights are not working. For safety and to avoid unnecessary citations, it is advisable to check all lights at least once a month. If possible, enlist the help of a second person. Activate all lights — including headlights, parking lights, brake lights, turn signals, reverse lights, and license plate lights — and have the observer confirm each is functioning correctly. If a second person is unavailable, use a reflective surface such as the plate glass window of a storefront. Park head-in to check front lights and reverse-in to check rear lights, using the reflection to confirm proper operation. Fully functioning lights are critical for road safety. In addition, police may stop you for a defective light and issue a repair citation. While this type of citation carries no fine or points, resolving it can be an administrative inconvenience.
