He is the hottest topic in New York City right now, for better or worse. Zohran Mamdani, the Democratic nominee for mayor, has been supported by many and criticized by many more for his stance on how to run New York City.
There is one comment in particular though that has drawn sharper criticism than others. According to the New York Times, on Tuesday he addressed that issue to local business leaders saying he would no longer use the phrase “globalize the intifada,” which has been seen as a call to violence against Jews, and would “discourage” others from doing so.
The phrase has been used by opponents of the war in Gaza and Mamdani had refused to condemn it, until now.
It’s a big shift for Mamdani who even though he has the Democratic nomination will still be up against Mayor Eric Adams and former Governor Andrew Cuomo, who are running as independents, and the Republican nominee, Curtis Sliwa.
The meeting of business leaders seems like an attempt for Mamdani to reach out and make sure they better understand his positions and to ask for their support in the fall.
