Baltimore, MD - June 21, 2023 - The growing popularity of e-scooters and e-bikes in Baltimore County has led to an increase in fire incidents related to their lithium-ion batteries. These batteries, also found in phones, laptops, and toys, can overheat, explode, and cause fast-spreading fires if they fail, are damaged, or tampered with. Charging these batteries in safe locations is crucial to preventing fires. Baltimore County Fire Department has expressed particular concern about the rising incidents of e-scooters and e-bikes catching fire due to improper charging. The Fire Department has recently conducted special training for firefighters to identify and safely handle compromised batteries, as traditional extinguishing methods with water are ineffective. They use a suppressant that suffocates the battery to extinguish the fire. In case of a fire in a residential setting, officials recommend evacuating the home and calling 9-1-1 immediately.
