Baltimore, MD – May 2, 2025 – Yesterday morning, BJL was contacted by a community member regarding a suspicious meshulach collecting in a local shul. According to the report:
“There was a meshulach in shul this morning who didn’t seem right. I asked if he was looking for Mincha or Maariv, and he replied, ‘in an hour.’ When I asked him what month it was, he had no idea. He also couldn’t read the aleph-beis code to get back into the building. When I tried taking a picture, he started yelling at me, saying ‘Come on, bro.’ Based on the interaction, I don’t believe he is Jewish and feel others should be aware.”
BJL followed up with Shomrim, who confirmed that they are aware of this individual and have determined that he is not Jewish. Disturbingly, he is reportedly being driven around by an out-of-town driver, who has been previously instructed not to bring this person into the community.
BJL spoke with the Agudath Israel Charity Fund, which issues the Teudah certificates that everyone's familiar with, and was informed that he was not issued an official Teudah through them, as is typically granted to legitimate meshulachim.
If you see the individual pictured here, do not give him anything, and immediately contact Shomrim (410.358.9999).
While it gives us no pleasure to report incidents like this, BJL was advised by one of our local rabanim to share this alert widely—both within Baltimore and with other communities—to prevent further deception.
Let’s remain vigilant and protect both the sanctity of tzedakah and the safety of our neighborhoods.
