Baltimore, MD - Sept. 15, 2022 - For a fourth year in a row, Maryland recorded an increase in reported medical mistakes, including some that were fatal, the state’s Department of Health said in its annual patient safety report.
The continued rise in reports of adverse events — medical mistakes leading to complications in treatment — is an “after effect of the COVID-19 pandemic,” according to the Maryland Hospital Patient Safety Program’s annual report for the 2023 fiscal year.
The pandemic exposed vulnerabilities in the health care system, including staffing shortages, high patient acuity and supply chain disruptions, which continue to contribute to errors, the report said.

"You hear that something that happens just last night, it’s a little bit scary, I’m not going to lie," a concerned resident said.
Despite these incidents, city officials, including the mayor and governor, have stated that crime in Baltimore is on the decline and have dismissed the idea of deploying the National Guard. However, some residents disagree.

Despite a dramatic increase in funding, Project Baltimore found one City high school that has not had a single student test proficient in math in four years.
Carl Stokes, a former Baltimore City Council member and charter school operator, responded: “They do a horrible job. That school should be closed.”
