Baltimore, MD – May 9, 2025 – For many years, Baltimore has had only one Neitz minyan. As our community continues to grow, so do our needs. With that in mind, Mercaz Torah U’Tefillah will be launching a new Neitz minyan beginning this Sunday, May 11, 2025 / 13 Iyar, 5785.
The minyan will take place upstairs in the old house — as you face the main shul, it’s the building on the left.
The Sunday–Friday Nusach Sfard minyan will begin 20 minutes before Neitz. This Sunday, the minyan will begin at 5:36 AM.

Bais Yaakov of Baltimore is making waves in the world of STEM – once again!
Baltimore, MD - May 8, 2025 - At the recent CIJE Spring Robotics Competition in Passaic, New Jersey, our incredible students took home both first-place trophies, showing the East Coast what innovation, creativity, and teamwork really look like.
Facing off with 12 schools and 50 robots from cities ranging from Boston to Atlanta, our talented teams rose to the top. Seven of our robots made it to the final round, and the 8th-grade teams clinched both first place top spots.
Some standout highlights? One of our 8th-grade teams scored a national high of 109 points – and Shani Rothschild shattered records with a jaw-dropping leaderboard score of 184, the highest in the entire country!!

At the recent wedding of my nephew, I remarked to his father, my youngest brother, how I noticed he shed quite a few pounds since the last time I saw him. With admiration I inquired about which 'diet' plan he chose to accomplish this feat in a relatively short time. Playing it down, he revealed to me a novel idea he came to on his own. He decided he would only eat when he was truly hungry!
The notion struck me instantly. He was so right! We grab food out of convenience, or simply to excite our taste buds. If we only eat when we must, we will easily reconquer our health.
After my amazement at discovering this evident truth, I realized that within it lies our greatest attribute as a Heilige Yid.
We pray three times a day - You are holy, and Your Name is holy, וקדושי...
Baltimore, MD - May 8, 2025 - U.S. Customs and Border Protection (CBP) officers in the Baltimore Field Office intercepted 250 stolen vehicles headed for overseas export in 2024, valued at nearly $9.6 million, officials announced Thursday.
The figure marks a 27% decrease from 343 vehicle recoveries in 2023, reflecting a notable local decline even as national recoveries rose.
Nationwide, CBP recovered 1,445 stolen vehicle exports in 2024 — a 9% increase over the 1,316 recovered the year prior. Despite the national uptick, enforcement efforts at Mid-Atlantic ports, including those in Baltimore, appear to be deterring organized vehicle theft in the region.
“Auto theft remains a rising concern in the United States,” said Matthew Suarez, CBP’s Acting Director of ...
Annapolis, MD - May 8, 2025 - Governor Wes Moore could face a primary challenge in 2026. Longtime city banker and owner of the Baltimore Blast indoor soccer team, Ed Hale, announced his candidacy for the democratic nomination on Thursday. Returning to his East Baltimore roots, the press conference was held in front of the Sparrows Point home Hale grew up in.
"I was the worker kid, cutting the grass, painting houses, things like that," he said.
The self-made businessman has a wide range of professional experience. With no family money or college education, he went on to join the military before becoming the CEO of First Mariner bank, which went bankrupt during the Great Recession and was later acquired by Howard Bank. Hale also ran several shipping companies and is credited for developing...
The United States is no longer demanding Saudi Arabia normalize ties with Israel as a condition for progress on civil nuclear cooperation talks, two sources with knowledge of the matter tell Reuters ahead of US President Donald Trump’s visit next week.
Washington would be making a major concession by dropping the demand that Saudi Arabia establish diplomatic relations with Israel. Under former US president Joe Biden, nuclear talks were an element of a wider US-Saudi deal tied to normalization and Riyadh’s goal of a defense treaty with Washington.
The kingdom has repeatedly said it would not recognize Israel without a Palestinian state, frustrating Biden administration attempts to expand the Abraham Accords signed during Trump’s first term. Under those accords, the Unite...
The Indian government announced on Thursday that its military had killed the Islamic terrorist who beheaded Jewish-American journalist Daniel Pearl.
The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), India's governing party, said that the Indian army killed Pakistani terrorist Abdul Rauf Azhar in "Operation Sindhoor."
A group of Islamist terrorists, including Azhar, kidnapped and murdered Pearl in 2002. The terrorist was affiliated with al-Qaeda and Jaish-e-Mohammed, an Islamist terror group that aims to separate Kashmir from India and fully incorporate it into Pakistan.
Who was Daniel Pearl, Jewish-American journalist?
Pearl was working as the South Asia bureau chief of The Wall Street Journal and was originally stationed in New Delhi. He moved to Karachi, Pakistan, to ...
Baltimore, MD - May 8, 2025 - Baltimore City, Baltimore County, Harford, Howard, and Carroll Counties Urged to Conserve Water and Limit Non-Essential Water Use
The Baltimore City Department of Public Works (DPW), in coordination with Baltimore County, Harford County, Howard County, and Carroll County, has issued a voluntary water restriction due to historically low levels at Liberty Reservoir—one of the region’s primary drinking water sources—which has dropped to its lowest point in nearly two decades.
To help protect our regional water supply, DPW has made operational changes at the Montebello and Ashburton Water Filtration Plants—reducing the amount of water drawn from Liberty Reservoir and increasing use of the Loch Raven Reservoir. To support this effort...
Stocks rose Thursday as President Trump and others spoke in the Oval Office to showcase what he billed as a "full and comprehensive" trade agreement with the U.K.
The deal will bring the U.K. into the U.S. security blanket, Trump said. He outlined benefits for both countries and said the administration has more trade discussions in coming days.
"It opens up a tremendous market for us," Trump said of the agreement. He said the administration has more deals in the works without providing details.
"We can all play games, but it doesn't matter," because deals are what matter, Trump said, referring to coming talks with China. He said the administration is dealing now with the European Union over trade issues.
Trump thanked U.K. Prime Minister Keir Starmer, who sp...

Jerusalem, Israel - May 8, 2025 - Chaim V’Chessed has taken steps to address a critical gap in the newly launched Tzedek Tachburati transportation discount program, recently unveiled by Israel’s Ministry of Transportation.
The innovative program offers significant public transportation discounts based on a traveler’s place of residence, helping ease the financial burden on individuals living in various geographic and socio-economic areas across the country. However, the eligibility mechanism for the program presents an obstacle for a unique segment of the population: residents of Israel who are not Israeli citizens.
The current system verifies residency through the sefach – the address printed on a teudat zehut (Israeli ID card)...
Baltimore, MD - May 8, 2025 - Baltimore has sued a major nicotine manufacturer claiming the company is marketing nicotine pouches to children and adolescents.
The suit, filed by the city in Baltimore Circuit Court on Wednesday, accuses Phillip Morris International of violating Baltimore’s Consumer Protection Ordinance through deceptive marketing practices to “peddle” Zyn oral nicotine pouches to minors, according to a Wednesday news release.
“The purpose of creating a flavored tobacco product is clear — it is meant to capture children and adolescents,” the city’s complaint says.
The complaint cites recent research that nearly 2 percent of middle and high school students report using nicotine pouches, and a separate survey where more than t...
Here’s a remarkable story I heard from Rabbi Shlomo Landau—one that unfolded just before Pesach.
Rabbi Yehuda Freilich of Beit Shemesh was in Tel Aviv for work and planned to return home at day’s end. But just as he was leaving, he received a message: one last meeting—in Yerushalayim.
He agreed and headed to the train station, suddenly realizing he hadn’t eaten all day. Starving, he found a small mehadrin falafel shop, asked them to pack it up, washed, and boarded the train, planning to eat during the ride.
The train, however, was packed.
Eventually, he found a small open corner and, though he normally avoids eating in public, hunger won out. Sitting down, he unwrapped his falafel. Across from him sat two men—an older man in his 60s and a younger man...
