Baltimore, MD - April 30, 2025 - Mayor Brandon Scott's summer engagement initiative, aimed at curbing juvenile crime, is facing scrutiny as concerns about youth violence grow. The plan is part of a broader effort to reduce crime in the city, but some are questioning its effectiveness. Retired Sgt. Betsy Smith, spokesperson for the National Police Association, expressed support Tuesday for the idea of youth engagement. "Is summer youth engagement a great idea, well, of course it is," she said. "I don't think anyone would dispute the fact that a busy kid is a less likely to get in trouble kid." However, Smith raised questions about the specifics of the engagement. "But we've got to look at, and I'm very curious about, what type of engagement?" she said. The initiative c...

Strength and Vulnerability In addition to helping us subdue our enemies, physical and military strength also deters adversaries and allows us to live without fear.[1] But strength is hard to achieve. Even the most potent nations and people have vulnerabilities. Hashem creates us and manages the world this way to remind us of our dependency upon Him. As the Jewish people are meant to feel especially close to Hashem, He makes us more vulnerable. Our people have always experienced this vulnerability. After we triumphantly left Egypt, we were first threatened by the Egyptians at Yam Suf and then attacked by Amalek. Even after entering the Land of Israel, threats and attacks against us continued. Eventually, we were even exiled — twice. Throughout our many centuries in exile, we co...

Alarmingly, 11 of these juveniles had prior arrest records, with two having been arrested more than nine times. In Jerusalem, every street tells a story. Some are named for kings, queens, and prophets; others for warriors, revolutionaries, and political giants. And then there’s Benei Beteira Street – a quiet road in Katamon that honors a group of sages remembered not for power or victory, but for something far rarer: intellectual honesty, humility, and the willingness to step aside for someone greater. The Benei Beteira (Sons of Beteira) were prominent Torah scholars during the Second Temple period. They are described in the Talmud as the leading sages of their time, serving as the Nasi (president) and Av Beit Din (head of the rabbinic court) of the Sanhedrin. As the recognized halachic authorities in Eretz Yisrael, the Benei Beteira had the final say on Jewish law and practice. Their ...

Strategic Affairs Minister Ron Dermer spoke on Monday at the JNS International Policy Summit held at the Waldorf Astoria Hotel in Jerusalem, and addressed the security and peace challenges facing Israel. Dermer declared, "In 12 months, the war on seven fronts will be over, and Israel will have won. I think you will see many peace agreements that either have been forged or will be forged in the coming years, but the key to that is victory. In the Middle East, when you win, when you’re strong, that’s what attracts others." The minister also said at the conference, "The reason I believed in the ceasefire in Lebanon is that we maintained freedom of action in Lebanon. We will ensure that Hezbollah does not rebuild its strength." Dermer stated that Hezbollah has not recovered sinc...
